Dr Remigiusz Żulicki from the Department of Social Research Methods and Techniques of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Lodz Faculty of Economics and Sociology will lead the project entitled "Generatywna sztuczna inteligencja w opiniach grup o cechach krańcowych. Badanie pilotażowe" [Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Opinions of Groups with Extreme Attitudes. A Pilot Study]. The project will be implemented thanks to the funding awarded as part of the MINIATURA 8 grant.

About the project

As part of the MINIATURA 8 scientific project, a pilot survey of opinions on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will be carried out among three groups of Polish residents who are characterised by extreme attitudes towards modern technologies. The results of this study will be used to develop a questionnaire for a wide-ranging public opinion survey.

The study will be conducted in a city with more than 500 thousand inhabitants, because this is where the data science community is concentrated. Three group interviews (FGI) will be performed, one for each group, in a focus studio, based on a scenario adapted to the group, using projection techniques, with audio and video recording. Interviews of approx. 120 minutes in length will be used to recognize the categories in which opinions about GenAI are expressed, understand the meaning of the categories and connections between these categories, distinguish the in vivo categories, assess sentiment towards GenAI and indicate areas where opinions are missing. Each interview will involve 6 to 9 people.

AI

Artificial intelligence is changing the world. Or is it not at all? Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools gained popularity in 2023, sparking a wave of commentary about their impact on the future of humanity. ChatGPT, one of the most popular GenAI tools, gained its first 100 million users in two months, a record in the history of online platforms. In Poland, ChatGPT was used by 2.8 million people in April 2023 – about 10% of internet users. GenAI raises opinionated debates about copyright, labour market, education, inequality, privacy, manipulation, discrimination, ethics, environment, among others. Extreme opinions oscillate between doom and salvation for humanity, which stimulates media hype and may favour the interests of digital giants. Sociological research will enable us to find out what Poles really think about the supposedly super-controversial artificial intelligence.

Gen AI

GenAI is an AI system that uses digital data and machine learning methods to create content. GenAI tools gained popularity in 2023, triggering a wave of commentary about their impact on the future of the world. ChatGPT by Microsoft partner OpenAI, one of the most popular GenAI tools, gained its first 100 million users in two months, which was a record in the history of internet platforms. In Poland, in April 2023, ChatGPT was used by 2.8 million people – about 10% of Polish internet users. GenAI is stirring opinion-forming debates on copyright, the labour market, education, inequality, privacy, manipulation, discrimination, ethics and the natural environment. Extreme opinions oscillate between the destruction and salvation of humanity, which stimulates media noise and may favour the interests of digital giants.
